Holiday Classics and Republishing Favorites

by Lori Perkins, Publisher

I've been creating books in epublishing for close to a decade now, and as an editor and publisher, I''ve published a lot of Christmas titles.  It always amazes me that the Christmas zeitgeist can be re-interpreted (and recycled, if you will) so consistently and enthusiastically every year.

Every once in a while, something stands out and a new Christmas classic is born.  We see this most often in the movies we watch every year.  When I was growing up it was just A Wonderful Life, White Christmas, and Miracle on 34th Street. Then A Christmas Story came along and that became a TBS annual classic.  The 90's brought us Home Alone and The Santa Clause, and the 2000's Elf.  My son and I are also partial to Die Hard on Christmas Eve and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but we know that they are not on everybody's must-see list. We rotate through the list every year but each time we re-watch one, it brings back all the old joy (we always say how well-written The Santa Clause and Elf are) and we find new things we missed or didn't appreciate the first or second time around.

Well that also happens with re-reading old Christmas tales I published a few years ago when I was the Editorial Director of Ravenous Romance, but they faded into the past.  This year, I was fortunate enough to be able to republish four of my RR titles, and it is such a joy to reacquaint myself with the characters and situations, and remember how charmed I was by their innovation.

I had been working with Trinity Blacio on her Running in Fear series (which we will be reprinting starting January 2017 - all nine books, plus the last one in the series), and she shocked me by sending in a rather long Christmas book I wasn't expecting.  I had NO idea what it was about, and it started with some bizarre reference to an old Christmas legend.  As I read and edited on, I chuckled at how Trinity managed to bring her love of supernatural hotties to the Christmas story - two single women were going on an Xmas vacation to an island owned by vampires.  And I laughed a little more when it turned out that the main character's boss just happened to be a vampire, with a hot twin brother, whose family owned vampire island.  But as I read further into the novel, Trinity blew me away with her creative interpretation of the Christmas mythos.  Let's just say this is the kitchen sink of Christmas stories with every supernatural twist you could imagine, plus kink.  You will never read anything quite like The Naughty Angel and Her Three Very Wise Men (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-thenaughtyangelandherthreeverywisemen-2192083-147.html), unless you count the sequel, Naughty Mommy and Santa's Helpers (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-naughtymommyandsantashelpers-2193099-340.html)  and the all new, The Naughty Stepbrothers (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-thenaughtystepbrothers-2193166-340.html).

I had also been working with Ryan Field at Ravenous with his M/M retelling of straight classics.  He had paid homage to A Christmas Carol with A Christmas Carl (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-achristmascarl-2192087-340.html.) Set in contemporary New York instead of London of the 1840's, Ryan introduces us to Carl Smite, a miserly antiques dealer in Greenwich Village who gets visits from Christmas ghosts, including Quentin Crisp!  It's both funny and heart-warming.  I am just so glad to give this book a second chance.

Also republished this year is Forever Bound with Tinsel  (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/storeSearch.html) by Chloe Stowe.  Chloe has a very hot M/M series set during Don't Ask, Don't Tell featuring a military doctor and an Air Force pilot. This was a novella set in that universe that took place over the holidays. It had been part of a three novella collection, but I remembered it being charmingly steamy and wanted to bring it back, before we re-released Chloe's entire Bound series, which we will do this year.

In addition to the books I mentioned, I have to suggest that everyone read DL King's A Scarlet Christmas (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/storeSearch.html), which is a Femme Domme retelling of A Christmas Carol.  Let's face it - everyone knows Scrooge needs a spanking - and DL King really gives him one, and more.  This is a unique treasure (and there's also some Hanukah erotica in Festival of Lights).

Christmas comes to Magic University (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-magicuniversitythecompleteseriesamagicalnewadultromanceboxset-1950518-344.html), Cecilia Tan's breath-taking paranormal tale set in a college of supernatural learning, in Christmas Magic (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-christmasmagic-2180675-143.html).  This amazing series is a box set.  Imagine Harry Potter goes to college and they all study sex magic.  A must-read!

I am also quite taken with Rachel Kenley's Her Stepbrother's Christmas Gift (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-herstepbrotherschristmasgiftaonceuponastepbrothernovella-1951825-340.html), which is a charming retelling of The Nutcracker with the added naughty bonus of stepbrother intrigue.  It's part of Rachel's whole Once Upon a Stepbrother series, which is fabulously romantic.

And I love our new Scoring with Santa (https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-scoringwithsanta-2184328-149.html) by Theresa Roemer and Renee Rose. It's a Hallmark quality contemporary Christmas romance, but with the expected amount of Riverdale Avenue Books eroticism.  This Santa is hot!

All these titles are 50% Off on Allromance ebooks through the holidays, so please indulge yourself.

Hey Joe: The Unofficial Biography of a Rock Classic Just pubbed

The innovative, hybrid book publisher, Riverdale Avenue Books is pleased to announce the release of their new pop culture title based on the iconic rock song Hey Joe. The new book Hey Joe: The Unauthorized Biography of a Rock Classic is by New York Times best-selling author, Marc Shapiro, chronicles the history and origins of the song.
Legend goes that Hey Joe was a momentary blip on the pop music scene in 1965 courtesy of a Southern California band named The Leaves. It would be their only hit. But over the next 50-plus years, the quirky song about premediated murder went on to become something special, a musical rite of passage for legends like Jimi Hendrix, Patti Smith, Led Zeppelin, and countless others. Nearly 3,000 versions of Hey Joe have been recorded and release, which range from familiar, obscure and, in many cases, downright impossible to find.
“Marc’s deep research answers the questions listeners are dying to know such as who are the authors of the song and which musicians actually recorded it first,” said Publisher Lori Perkins. “Plus aren’t we all are curious to know where Joe goes with that gun in his hand?”
Hey Joe was a rite of passage for me in the 60’s,” said Shapiro. “When I discovered the song it was literally on and off the radio in a matter of weeks and had gone on to have such a profound impact on the world of music on such a massive level. I knew it was a story that had to be told.”
The book is part, history, part mystery and part memoir. Hey Joe includes the memories of countless well known musicians who were part of the Hey Joe odyssey, a detailed look at the history of Hey Joe, the song that few have ever thought to think deeply about  and the rumors, legends and outlandish tales surrounding the song that ultimately culminate in the ultimate question.

Remembering Jenni Rivera on the 4th Anniversary of Her Death

We Miss You Jenni!

It's been four years since Jenni Rivera passed away, and to honor her memory we're putting her unauthorized biography on sale for 50% off all December with coupon code Jenni2016

We Love Jenni is a frank and revealing biography of the late Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera written by The New York Times best-selling author Marc Shapiro and journalist Charles Vazquez that goes behind the scenes to tell the riveting story of the iconic Latina, who was killed December 9, 2012 in a plane crash in Mexico.

Shapiro, author of popular biographies of celebrities such as J. K. Rowling and Justin Bieber, says the book tells the story of a woman "who never shied away from any of the huge problems she faced in life – her rough and tumble childhood, her cheating husband, her first love who in reality was a child molesting monster, her son's indiscretion with an underage girl and so much more.

"Jenni was such an amazing woman – it’s reflected in her fiery live performances and the music that would set many millions on the course for equal rights for women in a long male-dominated Mexican culture,” Shapiro added. "She was a star in a world that many of us did not know and only her sad, untimely death kept her from breaking out and having it all.”

RAB Trump Bio FREE through Inauguration Day

Free Downloads of “Trump This!”
An Unauthorized Bio of President-elect Donald Trump
Available Now Through Inauguration Day

New York, New York - November 29, 2016 – Who is Donald Trump? In an effort to give readers the chance to discover what kind of president Donald Trump might be, Riverdale Avenue Books, the award-winning hybrid publishing company, will offer free digital downloads of their new unauthorized bio e-book of President-elect Donald Trump written by New York Times best-selling entertainment journalist Marc Shapiro. The free download will be available from now through Inauguration Day on January 20th, 2017.
Trump This! The Life And Times of Donald Trump: An Unauthorized Biography digs deep into the truth that is Donald Trump looking into his family, childhood and early years in New York City, all of which made him the man he is today. All of this is interlaced with the tale of the rise and fall of and rise of his New York real estate empire.
“There have been many books written by and about Donald Trump, but no one has looked at him through the pop culture prism.  As a native New Yorker, Donald Trump has been an almost daily part of the city’s landscape. Now the whole country gets to really see this larger than life New Yorker. I think this makes Trump This! a unique biography,” said Publisher Lori Perkins.
Even with the barrage of media in the race for President of the United States, and the many seasons of The Apprentice, Donald Trump’s back-story has been largely untold.
"The reality is that Trump, outside of the tight knit business community, was a well kept secret to the man and woman on the street until The Apprentice went on the air,” said Author Marc Shapiro. “For those people, this book will definitely fill in the blanks."
The original book was published in February 2016 and has been updated to include Trump winning the election.
Downloads of this book will be available on Amazon, Barnes & Nobles Nook, iTunes, Kobo and wherever e-books are downloaded.

Masquerade Ball and Seance at Morris-Jumel Mansion this Thursday

The Morris-Jumel Mansion Hosts Haunted
Masquerade October 27th with Best-Selling Gaslight Fantasy Author Leanna Renee Hieber

New York (October 24, 2016): The Morris-Jumel Mansion, the oldest house in Manhattan, and reportedly haunted, will host a masquerade ball and séance on Thursday evening, October 27th.

Guests will be asked to don appropriate mourning attire and will be treated to an evening of live music and dancing, liberal libations and ample hors-d’oeuvres. In addition, for those purchasing VIP tickets, an intimate séance will be led by Jesse Bravo, the celebrity on Psychic in NYC who has been featured on MTV, in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, ABC News, VICE Magazine and the Associated Press.

Author Leanna Renee Hieber, actress, playwright, artist and award-winning, bestselling author, will be the guest of honor at the evening’s soiree. She is the introductory author in the newly published Morris-Jumel Mansion Anthology of Fantasy and Paranormal Fiction. Hieber has written ten Gothic Victorian paranormal novels for adults and teens set in 1880s New York City and London. She is a devotee of the Mansion and its mission: to preserve, collect and interpret American life from the Colonial Era to the present, and to use the arts to engage and inspire diverse audiences.

"As the author of ten award-winning historical fantasy novels, I find that my imagination is at its best whenever I immerse myself in historical properties,” said Hieber. “There is no such property as important or immersive in beauty and spirit as the Morris-Jumel Mansion. It is my very favorite place. Having enjoyed several book launches under its eaves, I am a passionate advocate for this great New York treasure, and I am so very honored to be this year's Gala Guest of Honor. I look forward to joining fellow aficionados of history- and hauntings- as we share a thrilling evening in New York's oldest house.‎"

In addition to the music, séance and readings, The Mansion will offer its signature raffle with prizes, including tickets to “Fancy Me Mad,” the Mansion’s current production written by the Mansion’s events coordinator and resident ghost buster, Vincent Carbone, about Edgar Allen Poe. Other prizes include signed copies of the newly published Morris-Jumel Mansion Anthology of Fantasy and Paranormal Fiction, original jewelry by the guest of honor, and a custom corset sculpture by renowned couturier and artist Camilla Huey.

According to Carol S. Ward, Executive Director of the Mansion, “Building on the success of our spring Lady J's Gala, our Haunted Masquerade combines theatrical elements with history to highlight the Mansion’s longest occupant: Madame Eliza Jumel. Our current reinterpretation of the interior brings the Mansion back to its mid-nineteenth century splendor, when Eliza made the house her home. Guests’ donations will go directly to the restoration of Eliza Jumel’s bedchamber and parlor."

Gary Reed of Deadworld has Passed Away; Deadworld Deadline Extended to include Tributes

It is with great sadness that we have to report that Gary Reed passed away suddenly early this month from a heart attack.

Riverdale Avenue Books  was working closely with Gary on the creation and publication of an original Deadworld anthology of short stories based on the Deadworld universe, which was to be published this Halloween. In light of his death, the project was postponed and has been expanded to be a tribute to Gary’s life and work, as well as an anthology of Deadworld stories.

With this new direction, we have been working with Gary’s estate to reach out to the many artists, authors and colleagues who have worked with Gary to see if they would like to contribute an essay (or short story) to be included in this collection. We are hoping to publish the tribute book in early 2017.

One of Gary’s colleagues also suggested that Gary could appear as a character in a Deadworld story in the tribute book, and we are looking for an author (or authors) to try their hand at that.  Some of the artists brought Gary zombie art to the memorial service and that could also make its way into the tribute book.

If there are authors or people you know who might be interested in being included in this book, please pass this notice on to them.

We believe that Gary would be proud of the direction this book is now taking and that it will reflect his contribution to the horror field appropriately, as well as his legacy.

Below is the link to the original call for stories. The deadline for this anthology is now December 15th, 2016.

Launch Party for Morris Jumel Mansion Anthology on October 15

Morris Jumel Mansion and Riverdale Avenue Books Host Book Launch Party with Readings for New Paranormal Anthology on October 15th
Saturday, October 15th, 4pm-6pm
Morris-Jumel Mansion
65 Jumel Terrace, New York, NY 10032

“George Washington used the Morris-Jumel Mansion as a base while fleeing New York. I’ve had writing sessions and meetings for ‘Hamilton’ there. Some writers go to the Berkshires — I go to 162nd Street.”
—Lin Manuel Miranda, author of Hamilton
New York (October 11 29, 2016) –  To celebrate the release of the just published Morris-Jumel Mansion Anthology of Paranormal and Fantasy Fiction, Riverdale Avenue Books and the Morris Jumel Mansion will hold a free book launch party at the historic mansion on Saturday, October 15th from 4:00 until 6 p.m. featuring readings by some of the book’s authors.
The Saturday afternoon event will feature six of the books’ authors reading from their short stories that take place in the historic mansion or feature some of the mansion’s legendary residents or events such as President George Washington’s first cabinet meeting, the alleged haunting by Madam and Stephen Jumel, as well as a servant girl and a Hessian soldier, and the story behind the assassination of Alexander Hamilton by Vice President Aaron Burr. Pulitzer and Tony-Award winning author Lin Manuel Miranda wrote his ground-breaking musical, Hamilton, in Aaron Burr’s bedroom. This will be followed by a Q&A panel discussion with the books’ editors.
The book, published simultaneously as an ebook and a trade paperback, features 14 tales spanning the genres from romance to time travel, and historic fantasy from New York Times best selling writers as well as first time authors.
Camilla Saly-Monzingo, editor of the anthology, and a neighborhood resident who was married at the mansion in 2015, commented on the stories in this collection,  What is particularly gratifying about this collection of stories is its diversity. The contributing writers to the Anthology are Latino, African-American, white, gay, straight, bisexual. They are parents, they are childfree, they are single and partnered. They are young and hungry; they are settling into mid-life; they are older and wiser. What’s more, these tales are ghost stories, science fiction, mystery, romance, erotica, time travel, visions of the afterlife, and paranormal fantasy.”

Carol S. Ward, the Executive Director of the Mansion, added, “It is with great pride and excitement that the Morris-Jumel Mansion sees this anthology being published, turning history on its head a bit and creating more stories about the house.
